Maria Montessori created one of the world's most widely used ways of teaching young children. She was among the first women in Italy to qualify as a doctor. She worked with children with disabilities and studied how they learned. In 1907 she opened the Casa dei Bambini in a poor district of Rome. Children chose activities and learned with hands-on materials. Her method spread worldwide. Mussolini closed her schools, and she spent the war years in India. She was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
