Editor's Take:
Christine Delphy asked a question many economists ignored: who does the work that never gets paid? Her answer was women, in homes and on family farms. She argued that this unpaid labour formed a system of its own, separate from capitalism. That idea became the basis of materialist feminism. She also helped launch the modern French women's movement and its leading academic journal. Her later writing on racism and secularism has made her a sharp voice in French debates.
