Editor's Take:

Cesare Lombroso founded criminal anthropology, a field built on ideas that have since been rejected. He trained as a doctor and served as an army physician before becoming a professor in Pavia and later Turin. Measuring the skulls and bodies of prisoners, he argued that some criminals were born, not made, and could be recognised by physical traits. His book Criminal Man set out this theory in 1876 and made him world-famous. Modern science has discredited his claims, which fed into racist and eugenic thinking. Yet his insistence on studying the offender, not just the crime, helped shape modern criminology. He also campaigned against pellagra, a disease of poor Italian farmers. His collection survives as a museum in Turin.
