Editor's Take:
Berthe Morisot was one of the founding members of Impressionism. She came from a well-off family in Bourges, and she and her sister Edma trained privately, since women could not enter the official art school. She studied with Camille Corot and became close to Édouard Manet, who painted her several times. In 1874 she showed her work at the first Impressionist exhibition. She went on to exhibit in all but one of the group's eight shows. Her quick, feathery brushwork captured domestic life, gardens, mothers and children, and women at their toilette. She married Manet's brother Eugène. Her painting The Cradle is now one of the treasures of the Musée d'Orsay.
