Editor's Take:
Albert Schweitzer was one of the most admired people of the 20th century. He was already famous as a theologian, organist and Bach scholar. At 30 he decided to study medicine so that he could serve the poor. In 1913 he founded a hospital at Lambaréné in what is now Gabon. He spent most of the rest of his life there. He gave organ concerts to raise money for it. His ethics rested on what he called "reverence for life". He won the Nobel Peace Prize and later campaigned against nuclear testing.
