William Blake

Born: 28 November 1757 · Died: 12 August 1827 · Age: 69

English poet, painter and printmaker of Songs of Innocence and of Experience and the words of the hymn Jerusalem

Did you know?He claimed to experience spiritual visions throughout his life, including seeing a tree filled with angels while walking in London as a child.

Editor's Take:

William Blake was a poet, painter and printmaker so far ahead of his time that many contemporaries thought him mad. He invented his own method of 'illuminated printing', combining handwritten text and colourful images on the same page. Songs of Innocence and of Experience contrasts the joy of childhood with the darker realities of the world. He created a complex personal mythology, full of giants and spirits, to express his ideas about freedom, imagination and religion. His poem Jerusalem, set to music, has become an unofficial anthem in England.
