Editor's Take:
Alexander Blok gave Russia's Silver Age its most musical voice. His early poems chased a mystical ideal of love. Later work turned to the restless streets of St Petersburg and a sense of coming disaster. When revolution came, he wrote The Twelve. In it, Red Guards march through a snowstorm with Christ at their head. The poem baffled readers on both sides. He died ill and disillusioned in 1921. He was only 40.
