Editor's Take:
The Weeknd began as an anonymous voice on the internet and became one of the biggest pop stars in the world. His early mixtapes set his high, aching vocals against dark, slow production, a sound that shaped a wave of moody R&B. He then moved steadily towards bright, retro pop. Blinding Lights, with its synth-heavy sound, became one of the most streamed songs ever. He has also moved into acting, co-creating the television series The Idol. Few modern artists have changed style so successfully without losing their fans.
