Shah Rukh Khan: The King of Bollywood
Actor, producer and cricket team owner, born on 2 November 1965
Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in New Delhi and studied economics before turning to acting. With no family connections in the film industry, he began on television in the late 1980s, winning attention in the army drama Fauji. He moved to Mumbai and made his film debut in Deewana in 1992. Early on he took a bold risk by playing obsessive, dark characters in Baazigar and Darr, at a time when most heroes avoided such roles.
Then came Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995, the romantic story that made him the face of modern Indian love on screen. It became a cultural phenomenon and played at one Mumbai cinema for more than twenty years. He followed it with hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Chak De! India and My Name Is Khan, earning the nickname 'King Khan' and a huge following across Asia, the Middle East and the global Indian diaspora.
Away from acting, he runs the production company Red Chillies Entertainment and co-owns the Kolkata Knight Riders cricket team, which has won the Indian Premier League several times. In 2023, after a break from leading roles, he returned with Pathaan and Jawan, two of the highest-grossing Hindi films ever made. Every year on his birthday, crowds of fans gather outside his Mumbai home, Mannat, hoping for a wave from the balcony, one of the best-known birthday rituals in world cinema.
