Editor's Take:
Rudolf Eucken was among the most widely read philosophers of the early twentieth century. He argued that people must struggle to lead a spiritual life. Science and comfort alone could not give meaning, he said. His books were translated widely and drew large audiences. The Nobel committee praised his warmth and his search for truth. The First World War and new philosophies soon pushed him aside. His support for the German war effort also hurt his standing abroad. He is little read today.
