Editor's Take:
Ruby Bridges was only six when she walked past shouting crowds to go to school. Federal marshals had to guard her because many white parents were furious about desegregation. Most families pulled their children out, but she kept going every day. Her quiet courage became one of the defining images of the civil rights era. As an adult she turned her story into a lifelong mission. She speaks to children about tolerance and the harm racism does.
