Editor's Take:
Frédéric Mistral spent his life saving the language of Provence. In the 19th century, Provençal was fading as French spread through schools and cities. In 1854 he and six other poets founded the Félibrige to revive it. His long poem Mirèio, a tragic love story set among farm workers, won praise across France. He then spent about 20 years compiling a huge Provençal dictionary. He shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature. He used the prize money to create a museum of Provençal life in Arles that still exists.
