Editor's Take:
Patrick Modiano writes short, haunting novels about lost identities and half-remembered streets. Many return to the Paris of the German occupation, a period he never lived through but cannot leave. In Dora Bruder he traces a Jewish girl who vanished in 1941. He works from a single newspaper notice. His narrators search through old addresses and photographs. They rarely find answers. The Nobel committee praised his 'art of memory'. Few writers have made forgetting so beautiful.
