Editor's Take:
Barack Obama's rise was improbable even by American standards: the son of a Kenyan father and a mother from Kansas, raised partly in Indonesia and Hawaii, who became the first Black president of the United States. A gifted orator and former law lecturer, he made his name with a single convention speech in 2004 and reached the White House just four years later. He took office during the worst financial crisis since the 1930s and left a legacy that includes the Affordable Care Act and the Paris climate agreement. His calm, measured style won admirers worldwide, even as his opponents fought his agenda fiercely. Since leaving office he has become a bestselling author and a leading voice in global public life.
