Editor's Take:
Osman I led a small frontier state on the edge of the Byzantine world. His descendants turned it into an empire that lasted six centuries. Few reliable records survive from his lifetime. Later chroniclers told of a dream in which a tree grew from his body and spread across the world. What is clear is that he won key battles against Byzantine forces. He built alliances with neighbouring warriors. The dynasty kept his name until 1922.
