Editor's Take:

Edgar de Wahl created an international language designed to look natural to Europeans. He was a Baltic German who taught maths and physics in Tallinn, then in the Russian Empire. He learned Volapük and Esperanto early and joined the debates about a world language. He felt Esperanto looked too artificial. In 1922 he published Occidental, built from familiar Western word roots so that readers could understand it at sight. After the Second World War the language was renamed Interlingue. He spent his last years in a psychiatric hospital in Tallinn.

Edgar von Wahl (Interlingue: Edgar de Wahl; born Edgar Alexis Robert von Wahl; 23 August 1867 – 9 March 1948) was a Baltic German mathematics and physics teacher who lived in Tallinn, Estonia.
