Editor's Take:
Muhammad Iqbal is honoured as the spiritual father of Pakistan. He was born in Sialkot in British India and studied at Cambridge, then earned a doctorate in Munich. He was also trained as a barrister in London. His poetry in Urdu and Persian called on Muslims to rediscover self-confidence and action. In 1930 he proposed a separate homeland for Muslims in north-west India. That idea later grew into Pakistan, created nine years after his death. He also wrote a famous patriotic song, Saare Jahan Se Achha, still sung in India.
