Editor's Take:
Mikhail Lermontov was Russia's great Romantic voice after Pushkin. When Pushkin died after a duel in 1837, Lermontov wrote an angry poem blaming the court. It made him famous overnight and got him exiled to the Caucasus. The mountains and wars of the region filled his work. His novel A Hero of Our Time, about the cynical officer Pechorin, is a founding Russian novel. He was also a talented painter. Like Pushkin, he died in a duel, aged just 26.
