Margaret Atwood is one of the most acclaimed living novelists. She spent much of her childhood in the forests of northern Quebec, where her father was an insect scientist. She published poetry first and became a central figure in Canadian literature. The Handmaid's Tale, from 1985, imagines a theocracy that controls women's bodies. It became an acclaimed TV series, and its red robes a global protest symbol. Her books range from historical fiction to climate dystopias. She has won the Booker Prize twice.
