Editor's Take:

Lord Mountbatten combined royal connections, naval courage and a gift for self-promotion. He commanded a destroyer in the Second World War, then led the campaign that drove Japan out of Burma. In 1947 he was sent to India to hand over power and brought the date of independence forward sharply. Partition followed at great speed, and the violence that came with it still shapes judgements of his role. He later rose to command the Royal Navy and the armed forces. His murder by the IRA in 1979 shocked Britain and Ireland.
