Editor's Take:
Antoni Gaudí made buildings that look alive. The son of a coppersmith, he studied architecture in Barcelona. His patron Eusebi Güell funded many of his wildest ideas. Park Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà curve and sparkle with colour. He took inspiration from nature, using shapes from trees, bones and shells. He devoted his last years to the Sagrada Família, which is still being built. He died after being hit by a tram in 1926.
