Editor's Take:
Lope de Vega was one of the most prolific playwrights who ever lived. He is said to have written around 1,500 plays, of which hundreds survive. Born in Madrid, he sailed with the Spanish Armada and led a stormy life of love affairs, duels and scandal. He created the lively three-act comedy that defined Spain's Golden Age theatre. Fuenteovejuna, about a village rising against a tyrant, is still performed. Late in life he became a priest. Cervantes called him a "monster of nature" for his astonishing output.
