Editor's Take:
Kublai Khan was the Mongol ruler who conquered all of China. He was a grandson of Genghis Khan. In 1260 he became Great Khan after a bitter succession war with his brother. He founded the Yuan dynasty and built a new capital, Dadu, on the site of modern Beijing. In 1279 his armies finished off the Song dynasty, uniting China under foreign rule for the first time. He welcomed foreigners, including, by his own account, the Venetian Marco Polo. Two great invasions of Japan ended in disaster, wrecked by storms.
Kublai Khan (23 September 1215 – 18 February 1294), also known by his temple name as the Emperor Shizu of Yuan and his regnal name Setsen Khan, was the founder and first emperor of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty of China. He proclaimed the dynastic name "Great Yuan" in 1271, and ruled Yuan China until his death in 1294.
