Editor's Take:
Bruce Springsteen became the voice of America's working towns. He grew up in Freehold, New Jersey, and played in bar bands along the Jersey Shore. With the E Street Band he released Born to Run in 1975, an album of wild, cinematic rock. Darkness on the Edge of Town and Nebraska turned towards harder stories. Born in the U.S.A. made him a global superstar, though its title song was widely misunderstood. His concerts often last over three hours. He won an Oscar for Streets of Philadelphia. He has been nicknamed "the Boss" since the 1970s.
