Editor's Take:
Joan of Arc's story still seems almost impossible: a peasant girl who claimed to hear divine voices and ended up leading an army. During the Hundred Years' War, she convinced the uncrowned French king Charles VII to let her join the fight against the English. Her presence inspired French troops, and she then saw Charles crowned at Reims. She was captured, tried for heresy by a pro-English church court and burned at the stake in Rouen at around 19. Later declared innocent and eventually made a saint, she became an enduring symbol of courage and of France itself.
