Editor's Take:
Jean le Rond d'Alembert rose from the steps of a church to the heart of the French Enlightenment. He was abandoned as a newborn outside the Paris church of Saint-Jean-le-Rond, which gave him his name. Raised by a glazier's wife, he was quietly supported by his father, an officer. He became a brilliant mathematician, publishing a key treatise on dynamics at 25. He derived the wave equation for vibrating strings. With Denis Diderot he co-edited the great Encyclopédie and wrote its famous preface. D'Alembert's principle is still used in physics.
