Huang Xianfan was a pioneering Chinese historian who championed the study of the Zhuang, China's largest ethnic minority group. Himself of Zhuang heritage, from the region of Guangxi, he wrote some of the first serious histories of the Zhuang people and their culture. He argued that history should include the lives of ordinary people and minorities, not just emperors and dynasties. He taught for many years at universities in Guangxi, training generations of historians. His work laid foundations for the academic field now known as Zhuang studies.
