Editor's Take:
Honorius presided over the western Roman Empire during one of its darkest periods. For years real power lay with his general Stilicho, who held back invading Goths. When Honorius had Stilicho killed in 408, the empire lost its most capable defender. Two years later Alaric's army sacked Rome, the first time the city had fallen to a foreign enemy in about 800 years. Britain was effectively abandoned during the same reign. Honorius survived behind Ravenna's marshes while the western provinces slipped from imperial control.
