Editor's Take:
Henri Poincaré was the last universal mathematician, at home in almost every field. He studied at the École Polytechnique and trained as a mining engineer. He founded topology, the study of shapes that can be stretched without tearing. His prize-winning work on the three-body problem revealed chaotic motion in the heavens. He came very close to the theory of relativity before Einstein. He also wrote popular books on science and doubt. His famous conjecture was only proved by Grigori Perelman in 2003.
