Alexander II is remembered as the Tsar Liberator. He came to the throne in 1855, in the middle of Russia's defeat in the Crimean War. Convinced the country had to modernise, he freed some 23 million serfs in 1861. He also reformed the courts, local government and the army. He sold Alaska to the United States in 1867. But his reforms did not satisfy radicals, and he survived several assassination attempts. In March 1881 revolutionaries killed him with bombs in St Petersburg.
Alexander II (29 April 1818 – 13 March 1881) was Emperor of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland from 2 March 1855 until his assassination on 13 March 1881. He is also known as Alexander the Liberator because of his historic Edict of Emancipation, which officially abolished Russian serfdom in 1861.
