Editor's Take:
Franz Liszt was music's first superstar. A child prodigy from Hungary, he studied in Vienna and moved to Paris as a boy. His dazzling piano recitals caused fan frenzy across Europe, a craze called "Lisztomania". He invented the solo recital as we know it. He also created the symphonic poem. He was generous to other composers, including Wagner, who married his daughter. In later life he became a minor cleric, an abbé.
