Editor's Take:
Ferdinand de Saussure changed the study of language forever. He was a prodigy from Geneva who published a major study of early Indo-European vowels at 21. He taught in Paris and then Geneva. He argued that language is a system of signs whose meaning comes from their differences. The link between a word and its meaning, he said, is arbitrary. He wrote little about these ideas himself. After his death, students compiled his lectures as the Course in General Linguistics. It founded structuralism.
