Editor's Take:
Edward the Black Prince was the outstanding English commander of the early Hundred Years' War. At Crécy and Poitiers his armies crushed much larger French forces, and the capture of King John made him a hero at home. Ruling Aquitaine proved harder than winning battles. Heavy taxes turned local lords against him, and an expedition to Spain wrecked his health and his finances. The sack of Limoges in 1370 has darkened his reputation. He died a year before his father, so the crown passed to his young son, Richard II.
