Yuri Andropov led the KGB for 15 years before becoming Soviet leader. As ambassador in Budapest in 1956, he saw the Hungarian uprising crushed by Soviet tanks, and it shaped him deeply. As KGB chief he persecuted dissidents and helped plan the invasion of Afghanistan. In 1982 he succeeded Leonid Brezhnev. He launched a campaign against corruption and lax discipline at work. But his health failed quickly and he died after 15 months. He promoted the young Mikhail Gorbachev.
