Editor's Take:
Edvard Grieg gave Norway a musical voice of its own. He was born in Bergen and, encouraged by the violinist Ole Bull, went to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. Back home, he drew on Norwegian folk tunes and dances to build a distinctly national style. His Piano Concerto in A minor, written at 24, remains one of the most loved in the repertoire. Henrik Ibsen asked him to write music for the play Peer Gynt. In the Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood became world famous. He was small, frail and lived with lung problems.
Edvard Hagerup Grieg ( GREEG; Norwegian:; 15 June 1843 – 4 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide.
