Editor's Take:
Dmitri Shostakovich wrote some of the twentieth century's greatest music while living in fear. He was a prodigy in Petrograd, and his First Symphony made him famous at 19. In 1936 Pravda condemned his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and friends vanished in Stalin's purges. He kept a packed suitcase by the door in case of arrest. His Fifth Symphony restored his standing. His Seventh, written during the siege of Leningrad, became a symbol of resistance. His string quartets are deeply private works. Listeners still debate what his music secretly says.
