Editor's Take:
Anatoliy Solovyanenko was one of the finest tenors of the Soviet era and a national treasure in Ukraine. Born in Donetsk, he first trained as an engineer. His voice was discovered almost by chance, and he went on to study in Italy at La Scala. His bright, ringing tone was ideal for Italian opera, especially Verdi and Puccini. For decades he was the star tenor of the Kyiv Opera. He also sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was named People's Artist of the USSR.
