Editor's Take:
Charles Perrault turned old folk tales into the fairy tales the world knows. He was a senior official under Louis XIV and helped run royal building projects. He sparked a famous literary quarrel by arguing that modern writers could equal the ancients. In 1697, in his late sixties, he published Tales of Mother Goose. It included Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. He added glass slippers and moral lessons in verse. His versions shaped later retellings, from the Brothers Grimm to Disney.

He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from earlier folk tales, published in his 1697 book Histoires ou contes du temps passé.
