Editor's Take:

De Gaulle twice shaped the fate of France, first in war and then in peace. In June 1940, as France fell to Germany, he broadcast from London urging his compatriots to continue fighting, becoming the voice of the Free French. After the war he left politics, then returned in 1958 amid crisis over Algeria and founded the Fifth Republic, the system France still uses today. He insisted on French independence on the world stage, developing nuclear weapons and keeping Britain out of the European Community. His towering, often prickly personality made him one of the most formidable statesmen of the century.
