Editor's Take:
Bernhard Riemann changed mathematics in a short life. The shy son of a Lutheran pastor, he studied under Carl Friedrich Gauss at Göttingen. In 1854 he gave a lecture on the foundations of geometry that imagined curved spaces of any dimension. Decades later, Einstein used this "Riemannian geometry" for general relativity. In 1859 he wrote a short paper on prime numbers. In it he made a guess, the Riemann hypothesis, that remains unproved and carries a $1 million prize. He died of tuberculosis at 39.
