Astrid Lindgren created some of the most loved children's characters in the world. Pippi Longstocking, the strongest girl in the world, began as a bedtime story for her sick daughter. Pippi is free, funny and fearless, and many adults found her shocking at first. Lindgren went on to write Emil of Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, The Brothers Lionheart and Ronia, the Robber's Daughter. Her books have been translated into more than 100 languages. She spoke out for children's rights and animal welfare, and helped change Swedish law.
