Editor's Take:
Hathaway engineered one of Hollywood's sharpest pivots, abandoning the princess-comedy lane that made her famous to pursue grittier dramatic work. The gamble paid off: her commitment to Rachel Getting Married earned critical respect, while Les Misérables delivered both an Oscar and proof she could anchor prestige projects. Her three films with Nolan signal another calculation—blockbuster credibility without sacrificing acting range. Yet her early typecasting as a wholesome role model, which she actively resisted, reveals the industry's persistent impulse to confine young actresses. Her trajectory demonstrates that commercial success and artistic ambition need not be mutually exclusive.
