Editor's Take:

Angela Carter rewrote fairy tales with teeth. She grew up in south London and Yorkshire and worked as a journalist before studying English at Bristol. Her early novels won major prizes, and the prize money took her to Japan, where she lived for two years. Her best-known book, The Bloody Chamber, retold stories such as Bluebeard and Little Red Riding Hood from the women's point of view. One of those stories became Neil Jordan's film The Company of Wolves. Her later novels Nights at the Circus and Wise Children mixed comedy, spectacle and magic realism. She died of lung cancer at 51. Her reputation has grown steadily since, and she is now widely studied.
