Tito held Yugoslavia together for 35 years. Born to a Croat father and Slovene mother, he worked as a metalworker and fought in the First World War. During the Second World War he led the communist Partisans against the Nazi occupation. After the war he ruled Yugoslavia. In 1948 he broke with Stalin, a rare act of defiance in the Eastern bloc. He developed his own form of socialism and co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement. After his death, Yugoslavia broke apart in war.
