Editor's Take:

Alexander VI became the symbol of the Renaissance papacy at its most worldly. He was a capable administrator. He openly advanced his children's fortunes, using Church power to carve out lands for his son Cesare. Rumours of poison and scandal followed the family. Some were true and many were exaggerated by enemies. He was also a patron of the arts. His rule helped fuel the anger that led to the Reformation. The name Borgia still means ruthless ambition.
