Editor's Take:
Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays and changed medicine almost overnight. In November 1895, working alone in his laboratory in Würzburg, he noticed a screen glowing across the room. He realised an unknown kind of ray was passing through materials. Within weeks he had photographed the bones of his wife's hand. Hospitals around the world began using X-rays within months. He refused to patent his discovery, wanting it to benefit everyone. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Prize in Physics.
