Editor's Take:
Viktor Orbán has dominated Hungarian politics for most of the 21st century. He first won fame in 1989, when as a young student leader he demanded that Soviet troops leave Hungary. He co-founded Fidesz, then a liberal youth party, and studied at Oxford on a Soros scholarship. He became prime minister in 1998. Returning in 2010 with a two-thirds majority, he rewrote the constitution. He describes his system as "illiberal democracy". Critics in the EU accuse him of eroding press freedom and the rule of law.
