Editor's Take:
Genghis Khan rose from a harsh childhood on the Mongolian steppe to build the largest connected land empire in history. Born Temüjin, he united rival tribes and in 1206 took the title Genghis Khan, often translated as universal ruler. His armies were famous for speed, discipline and brutal tactics, and they conquered vast areas of Asia and beyond. Yet his empire also encouraged trade along the Silk Road and allowed many religions to coexist. His legacy is mixed, remembered as a terror by many nations he conquered and as a founding hero in Mongolia.
