Editor's Take:
Tom Cruise has stayed a leading man for over four decades. Very few stars manage that. He mixes crowd-pleasing action with serious roles, and he earned Oscar nominations for Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia. His insistence on doing dangerous stunts himself has become part of his brand. Top Gun: Maverick helped bring audiences back to cinemas after the pandemic. His links to Scientology have drawn criticism. Few stars work so hard to give audiences a cinema experience.
