Simón Bolívar led one of the most extraordinary liberation campaigns in history, freeing much of South America from Spanish rule. Born into a wealthy family in Caracas, he was inspired by Enlightenment ideas and the revolutions in North America and France. His armies crossed the Andes and won decisive battles that led to the independence of what are now Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia. He dreamed of a united South American federation, but it broke apart amid rivalries. He remains a national hero across the continent, with cities, squares and currencies named after him.
